The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-National Mariculture Center (BFAR-NMC) celebrated its 61st Fish Conservation Week with the theme “Sama-sama tungo sa maunlad at likas kayang Pangisdaan sa Bagong Pilipinas.” The week-long event, spearheaded by NMC Center Chief Dr. Jericardo S. Mondragon, brought together NMC employees, fisherfolk, private stakeholders, and local government units to promote sustainable aquaculture practices and environmental stewardship.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Mondragon emphasized NMC’s vision to build a competitive aquaculture industry while maintaining a commitment to environmental protection. He underscored the Center’s pursuit of sustainable practices to ensure food security and marine resource preservation for future generations.
The event started with a lively parade, where NMC employees proudly represented various mariculture projects. This was followed by a Zumba dance competition, showcasing the energetic participation of every team. Adding a layer of fun and teamwork, an Aquaculture Treasure Hunt adventure challenged participants to demonstrate unity, decisiveness, and diligence.
Several capacity-building activities were conducted during the celebration, including training for fisherfolk, private stakeholders, and local government units from Davao del Norte. These trainings aimed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to the sustainable development of the aquaculture industry.
One of the event highlights was the cooking and deboning competition, featuring the talented Cagangohan Women’s Association (CWA), who prepared various dishes using the NMC’s primary commodity, Bangus (milkfish). NMC employees also took part in the challenge, showcasing their deboning skills with Bangus for the first time, adding a touch of camaraderie and learning to the activity.
On the culminating day, Ms. Karen D. Candilosas, Head of the Fisheries, Production Section, delivered a message of support, emphasizing the importance of the week’s celebration in safeguarding marine resources for a sustainable future. She reminded the audience that the true essence of the event lies in the collective responsibility to protect the environment for generations to come.
The closing remarks were led by Mr. Edwin S. Rosos, Head of the Satellite Office, who reiterated the dedication and hard work of the NMC under the leadership of Dr. Mondragon. Despite challenges, Mr. Rosos called on everyone to continue striving for excellence in their roles to ensure the progress and success of the mariculture industry, benefiting both the community and the nation.
The 61st Fish Conservation Week was a resounding success, serving as a platform to promote sustainability, foster community engagement, and showcase the importance of protecting the Philippines’ rich marine resources.
